Let's have a look at the evolution of printer ink cartridges.
First ink jet printers and printer ink cartridges were introduced in 1984. Introduction of ink jet printers made printing documents and changing printer cartridges much easier. It was a great relief after years of changing ribbons or adding toner to reservoirs within the printer.
The first computer printers were dot matrix printers. They used ribbons and print heads with pins to transfer ink on paper. These printers were much slower than modern ink jet printers. After a while the industry found new ways to make printing easier, faster and more convenient. Now we are using the drop on demand method where the ink squirts onto the paper through tiny nozzles in the print head. The print head is either build into the ink cartridge and is replaced every time you replace your ink cartridge or it is a separate unit usually replaceable by printer’s user. The amount of ink dropped on the page is controlled by the software driver that controls which nozzle fires and when.
By the 1990 ink jet print cartridge was widely accepted. Now printer cartridges can print in colour (photos) as well as in black for document printing. These days’ inkjet printers can print on just about any sized paper, on fabric and on film. Ink jet printers are used in a variety of settings worldwide and are a popular choice for colour printing.
Each brand of printer uses a specific type of ink cartridge. Model and cartridge number identifies ink jet cartridges for example: Canon Pixma iP3300 cartridge number 5 PGBK, Epson C79 cartridge number 73N Black or HP Deskjet D2530 cartridge number 60 Black. Most of these cartridges can be used by wide range of printer models like the Epson 73N Black ink cartridge that can be used by 19 different Epson printers.
Due to the wide variety of cartridges available before you go shopping for your new cartridge/s you should check your printer's manual to see exactly what is your printer model and cartridge number/s your printer is using.
