Beginning in September 2010, HP updated ink cartridges eith these numbers: 564, 364, 178 and 862.  The updated ink cartridges are compatible with all printers that use these numbers. They were designed in conjunction with future printers to deliver new features and are different from the previous design in several ways.

Most importantly the updated black XL cartridge body is physically smaller than the previous black XL cartridge body. As a result cartridges originally introduced and manufactured prior to September 2010 are not compatible with the following printers and all-in-one devices:

• HP Photosmart 5510 e-All-In-One Printer - B111 series
• HP Photosmart 6510 e-All-In-One Printer - B211 series
• HP Deskjet 3070 e-All-In-One Printer - B611 series

If you are using one of the printers listed above and receive an "Incompatible Older Generation Cartridge" error message you will need to upgrade to a post September 2010 cartridge.  It is not possible to modify older style cartridge to work on these models.

Check the product number on the bottom of the cartridge.  If it begins CN680, CN681, CN682, CN683, CN684, CN685, CN686, CN687, CR276 or CR277 then the cartridge is updated version and will operate normally in the printer models in question.
